Trip expense splitter for friends in India

Split trip expenses with friends in India by recording every shared cost in one group as the trip happens — flights, hotels, cabs, food, activities. HisabAI shows running balances during the trip and a clean settle-ready summary at the end, so you settle with one or two UPI transfers instead of fighting over receipts.

How do you split trip expenses with friends?

Most groups try to split everything equally and pay each other back at the end. The math gets messy because:

  • People arrive and leave on different days
  • Some skip activities like treks, water sports, or bar nights
  • One person usually fronts the whole hotel booking
  • Restaurant bills land on whoever's holding cash that day
  • Receipts disappear into WhatsApp by day two

A trip-expense app solves this by:

  • Recording each expense as it happens, not at the end
  • Splitting it according to who actually participated
  • Showing live balances so nobody loses track
  • Producing a single net summary so you settle in a few transfers, not a dozen

What trip costs can HisabAI track?

Anything that gets paid by one person and shared by the group:

  • Flight or train tickets (if someone pre-booked the group)
  • Hotel, Airbnb, hostel, homestay
  • Local cabs, autos, scooter rentals, ride-shares
  • Fuel for road trips and toll charges
  • Group meals, breakfast, dinner bills
  • Beer, cocktails, bar tabs
  • Water sports, treks, museum tickets, adventure costs
  • Toll, parking, parking fines
  • Group purchases — sunscreen, sim cards, beer crate, snacks
  • Souvenirs and shared gifts for family back home

How to set up a trip group in HisabAI

  1. Create a new group named after the trip ("Goa Dec 2026", "Manali Bachelor", "Office Offsite Q2")
  2. Add each member by name
  3. Pick Trips as the group type — settlement is enabled by default
  4. Add expenses as they happen — don't wait until the airport

How to split each category

  • Hotel: equal split if everyone stayed the same nights. Use custom split if some came late or left early.
  • Cabs and meals: equal among who actually went / ate. Use custom split for partial groups.
  • Activities: split only among those who joined. Skip the people who sat that one out.
  • Drinks: equal among drinkers — exclude non-drinkers from the bar tab.
  • Fuel and toll for road trips: equal among everyone in the car for that leg.
  • Single big bill paid via card: still log it as one expense, split based on who participated.

Handling late arrivals and early leavers

If someone joins on day 2 of a 4-day trip or leaves on day 3, the math gets non-uniform. The way to handle this in HisabAI:

  • Hotel: use custom split — their share is 2 / 4 nights for the late joiner, 3 / 4 for the early leaver
  • Group meals: only the ones they attended — log per meal, split among that meal's participants
  • Activities: only ones they joined — no need to deduct manually, just add them as participants on those expenses

HisabAI's custom split mode handles every variation, and balances stay correct without spreadsheet workarounds.

How to settle at the end of the trip

  1. Open the group's balances tab on the flight home
  2. HisabAI minimises the number of transfers — a 5-person trip usually settles in 2 or 3 UPI transfers, not 10
  3. Tap Settle on a balance and HisabAI prepares the amount and opens your preferred UPI app
  4. Complete the transfer in your UPI app under your bank's authentication
  5. Mark settled — the group history stays available if anyone wants to audit later

No spreadsheet, no "hey can you Venmo me" three weeks after the trip.

Example: 5-person Goa trip, 4 days

Here's a slimmed-down version of what a Goa trip looks like in a HisabAI group:

ExpenseAmountPaid bySplit
Hotel (4 nights × ₹4,000)₹16,000AEqual — ₹3,200 each
Welcome dinner₹4,500BEqual — ₹900 each
Water sports (3 of 5 joined)₹6,000ACustom — ₹2,000 each (A, D, E)
Bike rentals₹2,400CEqual among riders
Beach shack dinner₹5,800BEqual — ₹1,160 each
Cab to airport₹3,200AEqual — ₹640 each
Last-night group dinner₹6,500DEqual — ₹1,300 each

At trip-end, HisabAI compresses ~25 mini-transfers down to 2 or 3 net UPI transfers. Everyone gets a clear summary.

Privacy and data

HisabAI does not store UPI PINs, bank credentials, CVVs, or full card numbers. Settlement happens inside your UPI app. See the Security page for the full data-handling picture.

Frequently asked questions

Can my group use HisabAI for a Goa, Manali, or Kerala trip?

Yes. Trip groups in HisabAI are built for exactly this — hotel, cabs, food, activities, fuel, and toll across multiple days, with equal or custom splits per expense.

What if someone joins late or leaves early?

Use custom split mode on expenses where their share is different. For example, the hotel can be split with custom amounts so the late joiner pays for fewer nights. Group meals only include the people who attended.

How does HisabAI minimise the number of UPI transfers at the end?

Instead of paying back each individual expense, HisabAI nets balances across the group. A 5-person trip with 20+ expenses usually settles in 2 or 3 transfers — one or two people pay one or two others, and everyone is even.

Can we use HisabAI for office offsites?

Yes. Office offsites work the same as friend trips. Create a group, add colleagues, log shared meals, cabs, and activities, and settle through UPI at the end. Personal expenses stay separate from the office reimbursement claim.

Can we split fuel, toll, and parking for road trips?

Yes. Add each fuel stop, toll, and parking charge as an expense with the right participants — usually equal among everyone in the car for that leg. Drivers don't need to be reimbursed for time, just for the shared costs.

What if one person pays for everyone via card or UPI in a single bill?

Log it as one expense with the actual amount, mark the payer, and choose the split. Most restaurants accept a single card; HisabAI handles the math so the rest of the group owes their share back.

What's different about the trip group type?

Trip groups are designed around settlement — everyone is expected to be even by the end. Family groups, by contrast, focus on tracking without forced settlement. Pick Trips when you want a clean close-out at the end.
